personal and professional experiences that make me a QualiTY CANDIDATE
I graduated from Western Michigan University this May with a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Music Education. As an intern teacher at Plainwell High School and Middle School, I worked with all facets of the music program from beginning through advanced high school musicians. I participated in booster meetings, after school activities like pep band and pit orchestra, provided after school tutoring for music as well as general education homework, ran fundraisers and frequently communicated with parents. After graduating I accepted a long-term substitute music teaching position at Starr Elementary. I have gained experiences in creative classroom management procedures, maintaining an organized classroom with an environment that fosters creativity, collaboration with other teachers, and constructing performance schedules for concerts that work with extra-curricular activities. With hands-on experience with many marching bands, competitive and non-competitive, and performing ensembles, scoring in the top 5% in Michigan, I keep my students to high standards.
At Western Michigan University I served as Collegiate President of the National Association for Music Education. During my leadership the organization grew to four times its original size, gained more than $2000 through effective fundraising, and became more involved in the Kalamazoo community. Performing at weddings, funerals, Easter services and with ensembles as well as holding a private studio of trumpet students, I have been a professional musician for 5 years. In order to maintain high expectations and standards in the music classroom, I believe that a teacher must be a fantastic performer and have a wealth of knowledge of the actual music profession. These experiences, paired with my deep passion for community musical involvement, have equipped me with the tools I need to hold a music position.

Why did you pursue teaching
I did not have a great music education. I saw plenty of motivated and successful students drop out of music because of a bad music teacher or program. I knew that music was my passion and I wanted to make sure that students had access to a quality music education. I intend to cultivate a lifelong appreciation for music within all my students.
Teaching is a worthwhile way of spreading the love. The way I see it, excitement catches like wildfires. I positively influence one student, they share that interaction with another person. When I share information with students, they gain the opportunity to share the information with someone new. If that person shares the information, it becomes a chain reaction. A teachers influence is not just on their students, it is on the community.

What DO i want to Accomplish as a teacher
I want to create a thriving instrumental music department that gives students the opportunity to refine their musical skills and knowledge. A program that challenges students to work their hardest and assume leadership roles as well as foster creativity in a safe environment. My goal is to give students life skills while simultaneously cultivating independence and a life-long love for music.
I hope to advance life skills like independence, responsibility, leadership, innovation, teamwork, accountability, and a solid work ethic. Most of these skills are fostered and nurtured in the music classroom inherently. I hope to give students a creative outlet and a place to express their feelings and emotions. For some students band class is the only safe place or the only reason they attend school daily. My impact on students lives will be from promoting life skills, life-long friendships, and an appreciation for music.

Experiences that influence my teaching style
The trumpet professors at Western Michigan University have taught me to maintain very high expectation for myself and my students. With hard work and effective practice anything is possible. I do not believe in talent. As an encouraging teacher, I am insistent, persistent, and consistent.
As a professional musician, I realize that I get work mainly because of my personality and etiquette. I am an approachable and engaging teacher because I know that a pleasant environment is better for learning and success.

What do you bring to the community

In order to maintain high expectations and standards in the music classroom, I believe that a teacher must be a fantastic performer and have a wealth of knowledge of the actual music profession. As a teacher, I participate in community events and promote the city I work for. I believe in the band as a promotional representation of the school district and its spirit within the community. It is important to bring music to the community beyond the parents of band students; not only does the school gain recognition, but the community increases its quality of living.
I encourage "in the park" performances. Local, county and state parks that are nearby serve as a perfect performance venue for community music. Families within the community as well as people passing through the city stop at parks for recreation. It is a great way to spread music to more than just mom and dad. Why do we work on music for 6-8 weeks just to share it with mom, dad, and grandma? I encourage Christmas music, performed by duet, trio, and quartets, outside of local stores and businesses to spread holiday cheer, gain recognition, fund-raise, advocate, and promote business. These are a couple of my many ideas in community music.

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTE OF AN OUTSTANDING TEACHER
I believe that first and foremost a teacher must have an engaging personality and teaching style. The most important thing is to gain and maintain the attention of students in the classroom. The next skill of a successful teacher is good classroom management and effective discipline skills. An outstanding teacher promotes positive behaviors in addition to effective study and work habits.
A great teacher has high expectations for their students and encourages everyone to always work at their very best. An outstanding teacher needs to cultivate an eagerness to learn as well. With incredible knowledge of and and enthusiasm for the subject matter, teachers can ignite student curiosity and answer any question to keep the material interesting.

WIDE RANGE OF SKILLS AND ABILITIES IN MUSIC
Music comes naturally to some but it takes an incredible amount of work for most. I do continuous assessment so I can track student progress. Google Voice technology is a great tool for the music room in that it documents practice habits and productivity. Listening to the recorded final product of homework assignments helps me understand which students may be struggling, what is challenging them and why. It also allows me to give immediate feedback to students in an effort to give individual attention to students that need it.
I might give exit slips to grasp students comprehension as they leave class for the day. I strive to create a band family atmosphere where students feel comfortable and safe asking questions and following their curiosities. In addition, I make sure to keep up with the student interests of the classroom to work them into lessons and maintain student attention.
